"The South Carolina Encyclopedia" - Book Review

The South Carolina Encylopedia will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the state. They have a great website at http://www.scencyclopedia.org/

The South Carolina Encyclopedia
Not being from South Carolina, I loved Walter Edgar's South Carolina: A History book. I have read it and listened to it on audiobook several times. It is really a great history. The audio book includes additional information from the author who is a professor at the University of South Carolina (USC) and probably the foremost expert on South Carolina history.

By the time I finished reading and listening to it, I felt like I knew more about the state than many life long residents.

The Encyclopedia, edited by Professor Edgar tells you something about every county and almost every town in the Palmetto State. The articles are short and to the point. It really is like reading an encyclopedia. The website shows some sample listings to give you an idea of what the book is all about.

The book is not inexpensive, but it is worth the investment if you live in South Carolina, or are just a history buff interested in the state. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Remembering more than you see-- Travel Tip

Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.

Author: Benjamin Disraeli

Da Vinci Executive Journal,Saddle,150 Pages,9-1/4x7-1/4One thing I wish I had done a better job in the past of is journaling my travels. I've taken snapshots (but probably not enough until recently), but very rarely did I write anything about where I went and what I saw.

As the years go by, I remember just the little bits and pieces of the travels. There are times when I can't remember a detail. I'm sure there are millions of memories that I've forgotten completely.

When you travel, take a camera and a journal.. even a few lines or photos can help trigger a memory years later.

Thoreau on Travel - Solo versus Group

"The man who goes out alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready." Author: Henry David Thoreau

I'll admit, there are times that I enjoy "quiet time" and I really don't want to be around ANYONE else. At those times, a nice drive or roadtrip can be just the thing I want. It gives me a chance to think and a chance to relax

The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the WorldAt other times I enjoy the company of those closest to me when I go places. I see things when I travel with my wife Cindy, that I'd never of noticed if I was alone. Her interests lead us to places I'd of never visited.

I think that there are times for solo travel, and there are times for travelling with company. What do you think?

A Few Showers.. A poem by Gene

After the sun of the last few days,
the clouds seem so gray.

The drizzle falling, not enough
to wet the concrete.

But, the air smells clean,
and promises spring.

I'm thankful for the drops,
which will bring the flowers.
